Heartburn is a digestive condition that occurs when the acid, which is used by the stomach to digest food, backs up into the esophagus. This causes sensitive tissues in the esophagus to become irritated, as a result there is a burning sensation in the chest, behind the breastbone.
It usually happens after eating too much and too fast, because the body does not get enough time to digest the food. You can treat this condition with natural heartburn remedies or use a prescription or over-the-counter drugs..
Some examples of over-the-counter medications are antacids like Alka-Seltzer, Mylanta, Rolaids, and Tums. Examples of prescription drugs which are available otc in generic form are Tagamet, Pepcid and Zantac. All of these can relieve the temporary pain associated with heartburn, but they may mask an underlying problem.
If you suffer from frequent heartburn, you may have a more severe condition known as GERD(gastroesophageal reflux disease) or acid reflux. This condition can scar the esophagus and cause asthma-like symptoms if acid from the stomach gets into the lungs.
Acid reflux may also lead to Barrett’s esophagus which is a condition that can lead to cancer in the esophagus. Look at my Acid Reflux Natural Remedies page for more info on natural remedies for heartburn and acid reflux.
I use to suffer from frequent heartburn, but luckily I wasn’t diagnosed with GERD. I did have to make some lifestyle changes which included eating healthier and exercising more. Being overweight is another cause of heartburn.
Some natural remedies for heartburn are aloe vera juice, raw potato juice, fresh cabbage or celery juice, fresh papaya and pineapple to name a few.
The most important thing to do is control your lifestyle and diet. If you are suffering from frequent heartburn, you need to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol, fatty, fried or spicy foods, citrus products and fruits, caffeine, chocolate and tomato-based foods.
Drink lots of water. Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Eat slowly and chew your food well. Do not eat at least 3 hours before bedtime.
